The therapeutic team are committed to helping young people overcome issues that are having a negative effect on their emotional well-being and their educational achievement. Our work supports some of the key outcomes of the ‘Every Child Matters’ agenda.
We do this through therapeutic group work that gives young people the confidence, understanding and techniques to make a positive change. The groups of up to five young people meet weekly for an hour, over eight weeks altogether, and are led by two members of the LCET team. Most groups meet in a school during the school day, but we are happy to arrange groups in whatever context is most appropriate for the young person. Some of them take place at LCET’s b.1 cafe and arts centre after the school day is over. Every year we run almost eighty of these groups for over four hundred young people.
The groups are carefully constructed to provide a safe space for young people to talk personally and openly, and we work hard to help them achieve a positive outcome at the end of the programme. The content is a mixture of led exercises, dialogue and personal reflection, all presented in a way that a young person can engage with and find helpful.
Following the end of the eight week programme, we offer a range of follow on support and activities, for those young people who want to receive more support or just stay in touch.
Our strong background in youth work means that we find young people relate especially well to the friendly and informal style of our work. This approach makes all the difference in the impact of our programmes and gives young people the security of knowing they genuinely matter to us.
We have close links with other professionals in Luton, including the Local Authority. Our work is well known and supported by local schools and colleges, and by Children and Learning services within the Council.
